"The function of the child is to live his own life - not the life that his anxious parents think he should live, not a life according to the purpose of the educator who thinks he knows best."

TOOTH FAIRY

30 July 2013, Tuesday

We went to the dentist today as there are 2 teeth growing behind Min's two bottom front teeth.  As the baby teeth were already shaky, the dentist pulled them both out.

Brave girl!

Is the tooth fairy going to pay her double tonight?

CHICKENPOX

September 2012
Min had taken the chickenpox vaccine when she was 1yo but she got the chickenpox!

Well, I think the doctor did mention that a low percentage of vaccinated children will still get chickenpox.  They will have a milder form of the disease, lower fever, and a more rapid recovery.  Thank goodness for it!

UPEKKHA

25 April 2012, Wednesday

I was telling Zhen about the Four Sublime States of Buddhsim.  I was explaining to her what "upekkha" (equanimity) means.  I told her that equanimity means everyone is the same, everybody in this world is the same.

About an hour later... Min was telling Zhen that her friend could draw much nicer than her.  To assure Min, that her drawing are as lovely, I said, "It's ok darling, everyone is not the same."

Zhen: Mi, just now you said everyone is the same??

NOTE:
The Four Sublime States, which Lord Buddha singles out as the four mental qualities important for cultivation are:
(1) Metta: caring, loving kindness;
(2) Karuna: compassion or mercy;
(3) Mudita: sympathetic joy, being happy for others, without a trace of envy; and
(4) Uppekha: equanimity or levelness, the ability to accept others as they are.

HELPING OUT

25 September 2011, Sunday
A rare occasion where the girls helped out with folding the clothes.

BONDING

19 September 2011, Monday
I was cutting Min's fingernails when she kissed me on the cheek out of a sudden.
This makes me recalled what a friend once told me.  She said she enjoyed cutting fingernails for his son, even though he knows how to do it by himself.  She said she enjoyed the BOND that is there.
Sooner or later, there will come a day when they (our children) will not want us to cut their fingernails or bathe them anymore.  Why not do these things for them now, when they still want us doing stuff for them?
I seldom bathe Zhen as I kept telling her that she's old enough to do it by herself.  But when I do bathe her (once in a while)... YES! I do enjoy that special BOND!

MALAY WEDDING

25 September 2011, Sunday
We were at a Malay wedding lunch today.  Min saw some boys eating rice with their hands and told me, "Naughty boys, they eat with hands!".  I explained to her that it is the Malay tradition that they eat with their hands.  Halfway through lunch, the girls saw the ceremony where the groom's procession with friends, relatives, musicians and people meeting the bride at the bride's home.  Min was scared by the sound of the "kompang" (a traditional musical instrument among the Malays).  Min said the people are holding shinning shining umbrellas (yellow umbrellas).  On the other hand, Zhen walked up to the procession and enjoyed the "show".

GIVING BIRTH

16 September 2011, Friday
I was at the market this morning with my girls.
Lady at market:  "女兒?"  (Two girls?)
Me: "是的(Yes.)
Lady:  "一個. 這樣."  (Have another one.  Two too little.)
Me:  "個夠了."  (Two is enough.)

I then smiled and walked away.
Min:  " baby Have to cut stomach."  (Giving birth is painful.  Have to cut the stomach).
... showing her 2 little fingers as the scissors 'cutting' her little tummy!

Love her, my little 4yo!

DEFINITION OF LIFE

26th March 2010, Friday Afternoon
Zhen asked me "What is life?" today.
My explanation was... "A person, from being a baby until he/she grows up, being an adult, then old, that is his/her life."

Her explanation... "Is it like last time, I, zero (0) year old, then I grow, grow, grow and then up, up, up... is it like this?  Is it life, mummy?"

What say you?

from OSTRICH to CHICKEN EGGS

6th March 2010, Saturday Evening
Zhen asked me what's an ostrich this evening... and from ostrich, we went on to ostrich eggs... then we continue to the comparison of ostrich eggs with chicken eggs... and it goes on to the development of a chicken egg to the hatching of a chicken!

GETTING MARRIED

30th November 2009, Monday Night
Zhen: "Mummy, my 'ah koo' (aunt, father's sister) getting married is it? Why she wants to get married? Because she wants to have baby is it? She wants to have children? OMG! I don't want to get married when I'm big. I don't want to have children. Because the children very noisy, then I cannot do work."
Why Zhen said like that? Maybe because... as I'm in the midst of packing up stuff for shifting... I asked her to do her own things and do not disturb me... as she's sometimes very 'noisy' that I can't do my work. ;-D
