Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers
"The function of the child is to live his own life - not the life that his anxious parents think he should live, not a life according to the purpose of the educator who thinks he knows best."
~ A.S. Neill, founder of Summerhill School.

DOODLING TIME

29th October 2010, Friday Afternoon

Doodling time after watching DOODLECHAMPS! on TV.

Art is important becuase it encompasses all the development domains in child development.  Art lends itself to physical development and the enhancement of fine and gross motor skills.

Art activities help children's social and emotional development.  It helps them build self-esteem.  It is an opportunity for children to make a personal statement about their uniqueness through art while allowing them to express happiness, joy and pride.

Art is important because it allows children to be CREATIVE.  Each piece of artwork is individual and original to each child.  Children have their own thoughts and ideas of how things should look and they come to art with their own unique experiences.

It is important to make art activities open-ended.  Open-ended experiences are success-oriented because there is NO ONE RIGHT WAY to do something.  Open-ended art acitivities are motivating for children of all development abilities.  They build feelings of independence, confidence and an eagerness to learn.

All children really need to draw/doodle/scribble are:-
1) a blank piece of paper
2) a writing instrument (pencil/pen/crayon)

11th October 2010, Monday Night
There's a sad sort of clanging,
From the clock in the hall, And the bells in the steeple too,
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird, Is popping out to say "cuckoo"
Regretfully they tell us, But firmly they compel us
To say goodbye ..... to you.

"PUASA" (FASTING)

16th August 2010, Monday Afternoon
It is the Ramadan month of the Islamic calendar.  It is the month of fasting, in which Muslims refrain from eating & drinking from dawn until sunset.

Zhen's 6-year old friends in the kindy are also fasting for half a day.  Zhen wants to try fasting too.  She went to kindy today after taking her bottle of milk.  She don't want to bring any food or money for tea break.

While driving her home from kindy, she told me, "Mummy, some of my friends, they are  tipu-ing... because they shared food with other friends... they are not puasa-ing."

BHANTE

14th August 2010, Saturday Afternoon
As usual, we were at VBG, Temoh (http://www.vbgnet.org/) for dana on a Saturday afternoon.

Zhen:  "Mummy, how to become a bhante?"

Me:  "Well, they go to a monastery for meditation and stay at the monastery."

Zhen:  "I don't want to become a bhante.  You know why?"

Me:  "Why?"

Zhen:  "I don't want to shave... my hair."

(Bhante (Pali) is the polite particle used to refer to Buddhist monks in the Theravada tradition.  Bhante literally means "Venerable Sir.")

WHAT'S A CHILD'S WORK?

THE WORK OF A CHILD IS PLAY!
The importance of play . . .
  • Play helps children weave together all the elements of life as they experience it.
  • It allows them to digest life and make it their own, an outlet for the fullness of their creativity.
  • It is an absolutely critical part of childhood.
  • With creative play, children blossom and flourish; without it, they suffer a serious decline.

The nature of play . . .
  • a natural part of the make-up of every healthy child.
  • the child's love of learning is intimately linked with a zest for play.
  • for a child, no distinction between work & play!

COUNTING 1-10

22nd April 2010, Monday Evening
Min already knew her 1-10 but she simply do not want to say it, when asked.

During bed time, she would ask me to sing 'ABC'.  I would then ask her to say her '123' first.
She would go, "1, 2, 3".
When I asked her, "Then?".
She would go, "Then?".

Today when her father gave her some coins to be put into her piggy bank.  She sat by her piggy bank, counted her 1-10 quietly while putting in the coins!

Later in the afternoon, she said to me "Mummy, can you next time don't go to the wet market.  We can also get our things from the supermarket, right?"
